The Diocese of Paterson affirms the dignity and giftedness of every person, knowing that each person is created in the image and likeness of God. Our Office of Catechesis is committed to ensuring that persons with disabilities are welcomed, included, and supported in their journey of faith.
Inspired by St. Margaret of Castello St. Margaret of Castello (1287–1320) is a powerful witness to God’s grace working through human weakness. Born blind and with multiple physical disabilities, St. Margaret was abandoned by her family but found her strength and identity in Christ. Despite rejection and suffering, she lived a life of deep prayer, charity, and service to others - teaching children faith and caring for the sick and the outcast.
Canonized by Pope Francis in 2021, St. Margaret reminds us that holiness is possible for all and that every person has a mission in the Church. She is an inspiration to all of us, urging us to recognize the presence of Christ in those who are often overlooked.
The Office of Catechesis serves parishes and families in providing adaptive and inclusive faith formation for children, youth, and adults with disabilities. We collaborate with catechists, parish leaders, and caregivers to:
Promote full participation in sacramental preparation and parish life.
Offer resources and guidance for individualized catechetical plans.
Provide training for catechists to confidently serve learners with diverse abilities.
Foster belonging in parish communities which reflects the universality of the Church.
A Church for All Pope Francis reminded us that “the Church is truly your home!” This ministry is not one of accommodation but of communion. Every person has a right to know and love Jesus Christ, and the Catholic Church is called to proclaim the Gospel in ways that are accessible and meaningful to all. We echo the words of the U.S. Bishops: “There can be no separate Church for persons with disabilities.” Our programs are rooted in the conviction that catechesis must reflect both the beauty of the faith and the needs of each individual learner.
